Mr. Ron Payne

Music Caption Head, Brass Caption Head

Mr. Ron Payne brings a lifelong passion for music education to his leadership roles with the Southeast Alamance High School Band program. A 2004 graduate of Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Music Education (dual focus in instrumental music education and euphonium performance), Ron studied under the late Robert C. Clark and has deep roots in the band world spanning performance, education, and leadership.

Mr. Payne’s teaching experience includes serving as Director of Bands at Alexander Central High School (2005-2008), where he led a program of over 130 students and founded the school’s first competitive indoor drumline. Throughout his legal career, he has remained active in music, serving as Assistant Director for Operations at Wake Forest University Marching Band (2011-2015) and as founding President of Wake Forest Independent Percussion (2011-2015).

Mr. Payne currently practices estate planning and probate law as Of Counsel at Tuggle Duggins P.A. in Greensboro. He is married to Jenn and they have two sons: Aiden, a member of the SEAHS Marching Band and two time first chair all state euphonium, and Aaron, a Cub Scout in Pack 4051 in Elon.

Education & Early Performance

Ron began playing piano at age 2 and started formal gospel-style piano lessons at age 10, studying with Monica Herman (1990-1995) and Shane Jenkins (1996-1997). During secondary school, he made All-State band in 8th grade and qualified for auditions for All-State with his spot in the All-District band every year from 8th through 12th grade, ultimately earning the John Phillip Sousa, Louis Armstrong and ACHS Band Booster Scholarship awards among other honors. He earned annual scholarships to attend Cannon Music Camp, where he studied with Jason Roland Smith and Robert C. Clark, performing on the honors recital his senior year.

At Appalachian State, Ron received a scholarship on euphonium and his highlights include being selected to perform with the 2003 National Intercollegiate Band under Dr. Jack Stamp and served as principal euphonium in the Appalachian State Wind Ensemble under Dr. William Gora. He held multiple leadership positions within Kappa Kappa Psi, including Southeast District Convention Committee Chair and twice serving as president of the Iota Omicron Chapter. Ron also served on the Student Advisory Board to the Hayes School of Music and was active in the ASU Marching Mountaineers under Dr. Jay Jackson, Dr. Dawn Perry and Dr. Scott Tobias as a performer, section leader, music librarian, uniform manager, and Administrative Assistant to the Director and Rehearsal Assistant.

Teaching & Directing Experience

Ron served as Director of Bands at Alexander Central High School in Taylorsville (2005-2008), where he led a large band program of over 130 students, founded the school’s first competitive indoor drumline, and receiving Festival Disney Gold in 2008, hosted the 2007-08 Western Regional Jazz Clinic and served on the NC Bandmasters Marching Band Committee. He also briefly taught at Topsail High School in spring 2005, increasing music program participation by 200% in one semester before being lured home to his alma mater at ACHS. After beginning graduate studies in conducting at Appalachian State with Dr. John Ross, Ron decided to change careers and transitioned to law, earning his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2011 and founding a law firm, Payne Law, PLLC (later Apple Payne Law, PLLC) where he worked from 2012-2024.

Continued Musical Leadership

Throughout his legal career, Ron has remained deeply involved in music:

  • Wake Forest University Marching Band – Assistant Director for Operations (2011-2015): Led student operations and gameday logistics for ACC football and basketball, including major performances such as the 2013 Rascal Flatts collaboration and 2011 Music City Bowl trip. Served as Colony Advisor for the Kappa Zeta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and was nominated as an honorary brother in 2015.
  • Wake Forest Independent Percussion – Founding President, Board of Directors (2011-2015): Incorporated the non-profit organization and led its advancement from A Class to Open Class competition.
  • Piedmont Wind Symphony – Board Treasurer and euphonium performer (2013-2014)

Performance Background

Ron has performed extensively in churches and community settings throughout North Carolina on trombone, euphonium, tuba, and piano, both as a soloist and in chamber groups. He founded Angelic Fanfare, a short-term brass quintet, and served as pianist for New Salem Presbyterian Church (2006-2008) and as Music Director and pianist for South Fork Baptist Church in Winston-Salem (2011-2012).

Professional & Personal Life

Ron currently practices estate planning and probate law as Of Counsel at Tuggle Duggins P.A. in Greensboro with an emphasis on philanthropy and helping families navigate life’s important decisions to preserve their hard work to pass on to the next generations. He is married to Jenn and they have two sons: Aiden, a member of the SEAHS Marching Band, and Aaron, a Cub Scout in Pack 4051 in Elon. When not supporting the band or practicing law, Ron enjoys serving as a leader with the Cub Scouts (formerly a den leader and currently Cubmaster and recent Woodbadge staffer), practicing piano, studying spanish, and spending time with his family and their two cats.

     Mrs. Holly Holsapple, a native of Eden, NC, is a graduate of Western Carolina University with a degree in Secondary English Education. During her time at WCU, Ms. Holsapple performed for four seasons for the internationally-acclaimed and Sudler Trophy winning Pride of the Mountains Marching Band Colorguard under the direction of Bands of America Hall of Fame director Bob Buckner, current WCU Director of Bands Matt Henley, colorguard director Donna Buckner, and Carolina Winter Ensemble Association Hall of Fame choreographer Lenny Westmoreland.

     Mrs. Holsapple has performed in the Bands of America Championships, the Collegiate Showcase of Athletic Bands at the Music Educators’ of North Carolina conference, numerous halftime shows, exhibitions, and competitions featured on ESPN2 and the SOCON Network, and served as a choreographer in residence for high school programs. In high school, she was the captain of J.M. Morehead III Senior High School’s Pride of Morehead Panther Regiment Colorguard, a founding member of her high school’s independent winter guard program, and served three seasons as a member of the basketball season dance team and pep band percussionist.

      Mrs. Holsapple is an English and special education teacher at Southeast and lives in Mebane with her husband, Chris, and two daughters, Meredith and Natalie, both members of the Marching Stallions. Ms. Holsapple specializes in designing elements combining band and colorguard, flag and rifle fundamentals, and choreography showcasing pageantry and visual effect.

Mr. Vincent Reed

Vincent Reed has been a cornerstone of percussion education in Alamance County for over 27 years, serving as Percussion Instructor for schools within the Alamance Burlington School System since 1998. His extensive experience spans multiple educational facilities throughout the region, where he has helped shape generations of young percussionists.

Vincent specializes in comprehensive percussion instruction for both battery and front ensemble sections, combining technical fundamentals with creative musicianship. His expertise extends beyond teaching to include drill design and complete percussion book generation, ensuring students have challenging, musically rich material that elevates their performance capabilities.

As an instructor, Vincent is known for building strong relationships with his students, demonstrating the same trustworthiness and collaborative spirit that defines his professional approach. His ability to understand each student’s unique needs and provide tailored instruction has made him an invaluable asset to the Southeast Alamance Band program.

Vincent’s commitment to percussion education has made a lasting impact on countless students throughout Alamance County, many of whom have gone on to pursue music at the collegiate level and beyond.

Mr. Matthew Turnage  is a front ensemble veteran of 2025 Carolina Crown, 2023-2024 Spirit of Atlanta and multiple WGI Indoor Percussion Ensembles. When he’s not practicing for drum corps or indoor percussion, he can be found in the halls of UNCG where he is studying music.

Mr. Ryan Leonard

High Brass Instructor

Ryan Leonard, a native of Mebane, NC is a graduate of Eastern Alamance High School and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with degrees in history and music education. Currently, this is his ninth year teaching and sixth year teaching at Hawfields Middle School, where he is a seventh-grade English Language Arts teacher.

     Mr. Leonard brings with him the experience of nine seasons of marching band, including marching with the UNCP Spirit of the Carolinas Marching Band and two with Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps. “Working with the high brass section lets me combine my love for teaching and music, helping students build confidence, sound great, and have fun performing together.”

     He lives in Mebane with his wife Cheryl and two children Nathan and Riley, and one more daughter on the way.

Mr. Alex “Moose” Harris

Low Brass Instructor

     Alex “Moose” Harris, a native of Fairfax, VA, is a graduate of George Mason University with a degree in Instrumental Music Education. Mr. Harris’s principal instrument is the tuba/sousaphone, and he brings a wealth of knowledge to the program.

     Prior to the Marching Stallions, Mr. Harris was a member of the famous George Mason University basketball pep band and traveled along with the team on their journey to the Final Four Championships for two of the four seasons. Additionally, he participated in the GMU Final Four Battle of the Bands, where the pep band reigned over those at Florida, LSU, and UCLA.

      Mr. Harris’s post-secondary music experiences include instructor of low brass and marching at Fairfax High School, Director of Bands at Chatham Central High School in Siler City, NC, and the low brass instructor at Williams High School in Burlington, NC.  He is currently a private music instructor for his own studio, director of local theatre programs, event DJ, and substitute teacher. Additionally, he is the proud uncle of Aidan, baritone for the Marching Stallions.
